Abstract : The transient response and the damping of a cantilevered adaptive beam is explored in this paper. The adaptivity of the beam comes from embedded piezoelectric actuators which are used to enhance the damping of the beam. The dynamic model is based on Hamilton's variational principle and the interactions between the beam and the devices are modeled using Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method. The Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to obtain the approximate behavior of the structure.
